Some Queenslanders head to the beach in summer, desperate for breezes; others gravitate towards the rainforests of Mount Tamborine. At Songbirds, halfway up the mountain, you’ll find a winsome mix of rainforest setting combined with linen-topped tables and relatively formal service. Slide onto a cushioned banquette in the indoor/outdoor dining room and relish the tranquillity. A chilled glass of something organic or biodynamic from an eclectic list may have you thinking about booking a guest villa – a fine idea if you’re anxious about the twisty road back. Food offerings are fresh and clean, featuring organic and local product (some from Songbirds’ garden) – an approach exemplified by a subtly layered and anise-spiced beetroot terrine with walnut gravel, basil oil and creamy mousse of goat curd from nearby Witches Chase Cheese Co. In general, main courses mine the mod-Oz seam: seared venison loin, say, with sushi rice and salt and pepper abalone; or an assiette of lamb with a lavender and rosemary infusion.Open: lunch Mon-Sun, dinner Fri-Sun. Licensed. Mains $36-$42.
